Artist Statement

The eye has a mind of its own. It redesigns external reality into “inner realities”, adding what is not there or excluding what it chooses not to see. My paintings show these inner realities.

In my paintings, I enjoy going close to the surreal, showing improbable simplification of objects or spaces in a believable perspective context. The subjects are often soft urban scenes or objects in a spatial setting and are intended to suggest tranquility and peaceful enjoyment of solitude. Other paintings are abstractions of architectural elements or spaces. The influence from the study of architecture is usually evident.

Many of my on-location paintings are of scenes from my 17th floor studio where there are expansive views of the San Francisco landscape. Other paintings are done in my studio from line drawn field sketches.
